Women On Top In Social Media April 20, 2010

Who has the upper-hand when it comes to social media? If you guessed women, you are correct., Politics Daily women are outperforming men when it comes to social media.

Yes, it has been a pain for journalists to have to make the transition from old journalism to new but it seems women are making that transition easier than men.   Jessica Pressler, a writer-editor at the New York magazine blog Daily Intel, was quoted in the article saying, “Women are good at multitasking, they can move copy quickly. Male writers are more egotistical about their prose and won’t stand for the demands of these jobs. They think they are too good for this.”

Is that true? Do men really believe blogging is beneath them? If so, I hate to be the one to say it, but get over it.  This is the direction PR and journalism is going in and if you can’t accept that, you’re going to get left out.  The article goes on to talk about how when men first came into this profession, they were the bright ones, the go-getters, but now the media is changing and more and more women are joining. These men who have been around aren’t on top of their game like they once were. And with them, these women are bringing new ideas and new approaches to social media.

The writer of this article phrases it perfectly saying, “The choice is this: Join the new media revolution and change a whole way of doing things, or stay out in the cold.”

  1. Women are definitely dominant in the PR field. I believe this is because people have began to label PR as an “woman’s” job. The reason this is misconstrued is because people are continuously looking at the “pretty” side of PR. We even see the lack of Men in Public Relations in our classes. We could probably name the guys in our PR classes on two hands. Another thing I have seen is more men in the marketing field as opposed to the PR field.

    Hi Haley,
I read your blog about women on top in social media. I found it very interesting, yet not to surprising. My boyfriend still hasn’t set up a facebook account and I do not think he is planning on setting it up anytime soon. I find it kind of funny because I enjoy it so much and he can’t seem to figure out why. Although, I am starting to notice that older people are using facebook and other social media more than before. I look forwarded to reading that research article. I also noticed that in your blog you felt uncertain if men thought that blogging is beneath them. I kind of feel uncertain about that too and I don’t know if that is the case. But it was still very interesting to read! Thanks for the great topic!

I love this post. I do agree 100%, women are good a multitasking, and getting stuff accomplished. If I had to guess men or women, women would have been my pick by far. Sometimes I feel like men only want to network if it’s accomplishing something immediately, but women will wait out the goal and network to get there. I think men do have some advantages over women, but the grey area between is getting smaller, and women want more. I think the PR filed is only going to get better and men should watch out because we want successful career just like they do.
